Terrence Piva

RMIT University, VIC, Australia

A/Prof Terrence (Terry) Piva is a biochemist and cell biologist by training. His main areas of interests are photobiology, photoimmunology, cell signalling, enzyme activation, cytokine function, effects of nanoparticle on cell function, as well as cancer cell metabolism. He completed his PhD at JCU, and undertook Postdoctoral studies at the University of Oxford, ANU and QIMR. At QIMR he found that (a) TGFase was a metalloprotease and its activity along with that of TACE and matrilysin were upregulated in cells exposed to UV light, and (b) cells undergoing UV-induced apoptosis had increased levels of cell surface metalloprotease activity compared to viable cells. He accepted a lectureship at CQU in 1999, and moved to RMIT in 2003. He has published over 40 papers and 90 conference abstracts. Terry is the President of MEPSA, Treasurer for ASBMB as well a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Molecular Science.
